List: Top 10 Most Performed Operas in the World
Date: 1994
Source: OperaGlass
Base: A total of 180 works, corresponding to 422 productions and over 1,500 performances were counted. Data was taken from a catalog of programs listed by the magazine 'Opera International' covering France (30% of sample), Rest of Europe (50%) and Rest of World (20%). The author of the study, Alain Dornic, points out a number of weaknesses in the methodology, such as: only operas in the 'western style' are considered, programs from the former USSR are not covered, and the over-representaion of France.
Notes: Rankings are based on number of productions with specificity being the artistic and financial unity of a show, independently of the venue of the performance - e.g. a production of 'Porgy and Bess' presented in several towns would only count for one production. Musicals and most operettas were not counted. Verdi and Puccini topped the list by number of productions (58 and 44 respectively) with Mozart coming in third (40).
