List: Top 10 UK Radio Stations by number of listeners

Date: October 2004 to December 2004

Source: Rajar

Base: All UK radio stations

Notes: The figures represent number of listeners by 'Weekly Reach'. For any non-UK readers here is a subjective summary of the various channels: BBC Radio 1 is the 'youth' channel of the national broadcaster with the latest pop, rock, indie, dance and other sub-categories of modern music, plus a load of inane blather from DJs who think they are 'cutting-edge' but are actually just over-paid twats with a grandiose opinion of themselves who act as if they're the arbiters of musical taste for the nation. Most of the time this station makes your editor want to vomit but the evening programming is OK - Pete Tong's show on Friday nights is excellent. BBC Radio 2 is for the middle-aged, middle-of-the-road market so lots of AOR, more blather in the day-time and news for idiots. However, there are some interesting shows and a very wide variety of music is played. BBC Radio 3 is for classic music. There is constant debate amongst classical buffs whether this channel has lost its way or whether its focus on 'modern classical' music is justified. BBC Radio 4 is the 'intellectual' channel with lots of news, current affairs and world politics, though the term intellectual is used advisedly since a lot of the programming is basically lazy, left-wing biased bullshit. BBC 5 Live concentrates on live sports broadcasting and 'talk-back' discussion shows. Capital is, as its name suggests, based in London so concentrates on news from this region, chat shows and music - mostly middle-of-the-road stuff. Heart follows broadly the same agenda as Capital although perhaps more music based rather than chat. Classic FM plays exactly what its name suggests. I've never listened to Magic but its owner is EMAP and it has 9 stations throughout the UK. I gather it's basically another station aimed at the B / C1 / C2 socio-demographic market. Kiss FM features dance music in all its forms so has a younger demographic.
