List: Top 10 Daily Newspapers in Germany by Circulation
Date: Q1 2009
Source: Compiled from various sources by Top Ten 10 dot com
Base: All newspapers in Germany producing daily editions (not inc. Sunday)
Notes: The down-market tabloid Bild (published by Axel Springer AG) dominates the list of most read newspapers in Germany. It is a true 'national' paper whereas many of its nearest competitors are regionally based. Suddeutsche Zeitung is considered a 'liberal' paper, whilst Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (known as FAZ) is the main serious conservative newspaper in the country. Die Welt (another Axel Springer title) has a focus on business and finance as does Handelsblatt (published in Dusseldorf by Verlagsgruppe, a subsidiary of Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group). Die Tageszeitung (commonly referred to as taz) is a cooperative-owned German daily newspaper which is administrated by a workers' self-management. The newspaper industry in Germany is characterised by falling readership levels and increased concentration of ownership.
