List: Top Ten Highest Mountains in the UK

Date: 1997

Source: Munro's Tables (Revised)

Base: All mountains in the United Kingdom whose summits may be considered individual mountains as opposed to subsidiary peaks.

Notes: All of the top ten tallest mountains in Britain are located in Scotland, including the famous Ben Nevis, located at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber region.

The list is taken from the 1997 revised edition of the Munro Tables. They are named after Sir Hugh Munro (1856 - 1919), who produced the first compilation of a catalogue of such hills in 1891. The Scottish Mountaineering Club revised the original tables in 1997 in response to new height data from Ordnance Survey and to address a perceived inconsistency as to which peaks qualified as subsidiary summits.

The highest mountain in Wales is Snowdon, in the county of Gwynedd (1,085m). The highest mountain in England is Scafell Pike, in the county of Cumbria (978m). And in Northern Ireland the tallest is Slieve Donard (849m).
