List: Top Ten British Fighter Pilots in Second World War
Date: December 1999
Source: Fighter Pilot 'Ace' List compiled by Al Bowers and David Lednicer.
Base: All British fighter pilots (RAF) in World War II with a confirmed 'Victory'
Notes: Different air forces had different methods of tallying a 'Victory' (i.e. plane shot down) so figures cannot be compared fairly across the nations. All pilots are English unless otherwise indicated. Air Vice Marshal James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson CB, CBE, DSO and two Bars, DFC and Bar (9 March 1915–30 January 2001) shot down 38 Luftwaffe aircraft and spent a period flying alongside the legendary Wing Commander Douglas Bader.
